Thirty-four students crossed the stage inside the gymnasium of Teulon Collegiate Institute during its graduation ceremony on June 21. Approximately 500 friends, family and community members attended the ceremony to witness the graduates enter into the next phase of their lives.

TCI principal Paul Magnan acknowledged the overall academic achievement of the graduating class with 18 students — the majority of the class —  on the Honour Roll, including three who have received Distinction Awards. The same number of students also received scholarships and bursaries, most of which coming from the local community.

“Sixty-two percent of our students are going on to some post-secondary education. That is impressive,” Magnan said. He later told the graduates, “Everything you do is based on the choices you make … You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make. Period.”

A rose ceremony where graduates hand out roses to loved ones and a celebration of the Teulon Saints division championship-winning lacrosse team followed before the granting of the diplomas.

The Governor General’s Academic Medal was awarded to Skylar Anderson who had a 93.41% academic average over the past two school years. She also achieved highest standing in Foods and Nutrition 40G (99%) and Psychology (97%). Grace Riley was awarded the ISD Proficiency Award with a 92% academic average, as well as achieving highest standing in French (91%), English Transactional Focus (96%), Biology (92%), Arts (94%) and Drama (99%).

Vanessa Campbell and Carter Kiel were the co-valedictorians for this year’s class, poking fun at teachers and reminiscing on memories over their past six years at the school.

“All the late assignments, sleepless nights and awful test scores are over. We did it,” Campbell said to the audience.
