The Teulon-Rockwood Fire Department is raising funds, as well as awareness for men’s health issues by taking part in Movember this month.

Movember is a campaign which takes place every November bringing attention to prostate and testicular cancers, as well as men’s mental health. To align with these causes, some men choose to grow moustaches or other forms of facial hair.

Last year, the TRFD raised $6,100 for the Movember Foundation and, as of Nov. 22, have raised $1,795 online for the charity this year.

“It was a campaign we first participated in last year and some of the guys felt that it was a good way for the department to support the initiatives that Movember brings, between cancer care and mental health,” Teulon-Rockwood fire chief Chris Dawson told The Stonewall Argus and Teulon Times.

For some of the firefighters, Dawson added that the cause is personal to them.

“We’ve had members that last year went through some cancer treatments and came out the other side with positive results, so we were very happy with that,” he said. “That’s what probably raised our awareness with something like this.”

Dawson also mentioned that it can be considered “taboo” to discuss men’s health, but in order to help, the conservation must start.

“At the end of the day, it’s really important (to talk about it), because if you’re not taking care of yourself, who’s going to, right?” he said.

Firefighters must be clean shaven while wearing oxygen masks, but Dawson added that a handful of his colleagues have either started to grow or have grown facial hair for the cause.
