The Stonewall Jets earned four of a possible six points in the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League standings, beginning with a win against the league’s top team.
The Jets doubled up on the Charleswood Hawks 6-3 at Eric Coy Arena in Winnipeg on Dec. 8. With the win, Stonewall moved up to fourth place in the standings with a record of 12-10-0 with 24 points, two points back of the St. James Canucks for third place. The Hawks fell to 9-11-1 with 19 points in seventh place.
Ryan McMahon scored first for the Jets at 18:20 of the first period.
Keeven Daniels-Webb put Stonewall up 2-0 only 41 seconds into the middle frame and Carson Ouellette increased the lead to three at 4:43. Sean Robinson’s power play marker was Charleswood’s first goal of the contest at 6:39, but Marcus Dewey made the score 4-1 for the Jets at 11:36. Adam Stewart cut Stonewall’s lead to two at 14:13.
Robinson scored his second of the game 32 seconds into the final frame, but the Jets added insurance on James Maxwell’s marker at 3:19. Brendan Labossiere all but sealed the win for Stonewall with his goal at 16:24.
Curtis Beck made 17 saves for the Jets in the win, while Eric Samyn stopped 38 shots for the Hawks.
Riels 3 Jets 1
The St. Boniface Riels, currently sitting outside playoff position, scored three unanswered goals to defeat Stonewall 3-1 at the Veterans Memorial Sports Complex in Stonewall on Dec. 6.
Kyle Lang, Nicolas Burmey and Joe Akadiri all scored for the Riels.
Foster Bytheway’s first-period marker was the only one for the Jets.
In a battle of former Interlake Lightning netminders, Teulon’s Josh Bond made 43 saves for the Riels. Ashern’s Adam Swan stopped 31 shots for Stonewall.
Jets 6 Twisters 5 (OT)
Maxwell’s second goal of the game at 2:03 of overtime gave the Jets a 6-5 win over the Pembina Valley Twisters at the VMSC on Dec. 4. The defeat was only the third suffered by the Twisters this season, who currently sit in first place with an 18-1-2 record with
Daniels-Webb also scored twice for Stonewall with teammates Ouellette and Brandon Kochen also scoring.
Jeremie Goderis and Brendan Keck each scored twice for Pembina Valley and Nick Hatley added another goal for the Twisters.
Beck made 48 saves for the Jets, while Martin Gagnon stopped 23 shots for Pembina Valley.
The Jets will host the Twisters again at the VMSC on Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. where the team’s Teddy Bear Toss will also take place. Fans are invited to bring a new stuffed toy to throw onto the ice. Stonewall will face the Fort Garry/Fort Rouge Twins at Gateway Arena on Dec. 15.
